The effect of the amount (1.0 wt % to 3.0 wt %) of bentonites modified with quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salts on the properties of epoxy resin/glass fibre composites was studied. The tensile, bending and impact strenths as well oxygen index of the composites were determined. The mechanical properties and flame resistance of the laminates filled with the modified bentonites were significantly better than that of laminates produced from an unfilled resin. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscope studies were also performed to investigate the adhesion between the laminate components. In particukar, the variation of the applied force as a function of time during the impact fracture of laminates based on modified bentonites-reinforced epoxy resin-matrix was studied. Contact angles between glass fibre and resin as a function of operation time for the unmodified epoxy resin and the composites were also determined.
