In a vehicle project, the car maker and the tire manufacturer want to early identify the best tire solution for the car. In the scope of reducing costs and delay in development steps, the physical prototypes - vehicle and tires - decrease and are later available in the vehicle project. If the numerical model for each component is reliable and accurate, the simulation tool becomes a true alternative to check vehicle performances. Concerning the tire wheel assembly, it is essential to forecast vehicle performance in structure borne road noise because it is in direct relationship with the ground - main source of excitation. However, the difficulties are, on the one hand, to provide such a model in rolling condition which corresponds to its usage, on the other hand, to integrate it in a whole vehicle numerical model. In order to take up this challenge in road noise performance, Michelin society have developed a sub structured tire wheel cavity model in dynamics taking into account the rolling effects (gyroscopy and centrifugation). Moreover, that model can be applied in a standard simulation chain. Advantages of such a model, regarding the tire, the wheel, the cavity and theirs interactions will be discussed. An application on transverse cleat test simulations will be shown for which the excitation model is well known. This numerical approach is a step forward to control the vehicle interior noise performance at the early steps of a vehicle project. Nevertheless, some new technical challenges already appear regarding the validation of such a model that will need to be further discussed: the excitation model whatever the solicitation in the contact patch -ground indentation, cleat, pothole- and technologies to obtain some accurate experimental forces and torques at the wheel center in the high frequency band.
