The perception of comfort for occupants in cars depends largely on the acoustics and air conditioning of the car interior. The resulting feeling in an automobile will be strongly influenced by the materials and structures of seating, headlining and side trim panels. These components are primarily being produced using multi layer structures such as spacer fabrics, nonwovens, wovens, foams etc. Among other spacer fabrics are already being used as an alternative to foams for upholstery of seats and / or other interior textiles. The properties of the individual components can already be determined by standardized test methods. However, currently there is no possibility for automotive manufacturers and suppliers to develop new textiles and textile composites for automotive interiors holistically. At present there are no cross-sectoral development strategies and solutions between textile manufacturers and automotive suppliers. In particular automotive suppliers are facing major development efforts due to increased requirements in terms of leaner and more cost-effective production, the use of new materials, sustainability and new boundary conditions such as modified acoustic emissions from electric motors or increased comfort requirements. Companies and research institutes for automobile interiors established a center of excellence in Aachen as a part of the Ziel2-NRW project "Development and test center for innovative textiles in automotive interiors: Interior Automotive Center (AIC)". A core objective of the AIC project is the development and subsequent use of a test bench that allows the systematic determination of the influence of textile interior components to the acoustic and thermal comfort feeling of occupants. Another goal of the project is the determination of material parameters for the targeted design of textiles, so that tailor-made textiles can be designed for acoustic and thermal requirements.
