Increasing standards on electrical post-crash issues raise the requirements on the 12 V board system, e.g. emergency call. Currently, the degree of deformation of 12 V batteries is not investigated in FE crash simulation. Yet batteries must deliver a sufficient voltage in all post-crash issues. For that reason it is important to have a fundamental knowledge of the crash performance of 12 V batteries in testing as well as in FE simulations. Therefore Adam Opel AG started a project in cooperation with Forschungsgesellschaft Kraftfahrzeuge Aachen mbH to improve the predictability of the battery performance within high-speed crash simulation. The target of this project was to correlate the FE models of 12 V batteries and describe the crash performance that could occur during a full vehicle crash. The batteries to be investigated were standard batteries (LN3/LN4) with acid and AGM electrolyte. In the first step, two test setups for 12 V battery component tests were derived by a detailed analysis of crash performance of current vehicles. These test setups were analysed in quasi-static component tests and in FE-simulations with different battery types for a first correlation study. With that input two load cases for dynamic component tests using the same test setups were developed in FE-simulation and conducted in real tests. All results of these component tests were used to run a detailed correlation study on the relevant battery types in quasi-static and dynamic component tests. The target of this work package was to find the best compromise concerning deformation behaviour and energy absorption at different velocities in the FE models for these batteries. These FE models shall be used in full vehicle crash simulations during the development of new vehicles.
