Car to Car, Car to cloud and car to infrastructure communication systems research has grown in recent years. Today connected vehicles have the potential to provide valuable car and traffic data for intelligent mobility services for increased safety, security, mobility and environmental benefits. This paper describes the collaborative initiative "CITY-e" set-up by DENSO and FEV. Since summer 2013 the CITY-e framework serves as a rapid development and fleet test platform for innovative and intelligent communication solutions using the vehicle as a sensor. Vehicle, powertrain and ambient data are analyzed and processed by "intelligent connection units (iCUs) in the vehicles and are combined with additional external data sources within a private cloud to provide new intelligent connection services (iCS). These new "Connected Intelligence" applications serve as basis for further developments in the field of connected cars focusing on solutions for European cities.
