Starting with the introduction of the DAF LF hybrid distribution truck, also trucks were equipped with hybrid driveline technology. The research project described in this article explains how and why not only the fuel consumption and thus the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of small distribution trucks, typically driving in high dynamic cycles, can benefit from hybrid technology. Also for heavy-duty and long-haul transport there is a future for hybrid technology based on an improved TCO when a smart and optimized energy management is applied. Next to that, taking into account also other business-case opportunities in the hybrid driveline concept helps to support the fleet owner business-case for this kind of technology. This increases the chances for an earlier market introduction of hybrid technology in heavy-duty and long-haul trucks.
