In this study, a complete analysis of a Premium has been performed, to evaluate all the electrical and mechanical power consumption of the auxiliaries' components present in the BMW premium vehicle. Both mechanical and 12V electrical components have been analyzed, and measurements have been performed over static tests and several driving cycles at various temperature conditions. This approach enabled a comprehensive review of all the power consumers of the vehicle, and to understand how much the climate conditions could modify the power request. Analysis of the mechanical and electrical components of the BMW vehicle reinforced the view that A/C compressor, fan, blower and electric power steering are among the components that consume a lot of power. In a second part, the 48V electrification has been evaluated through simulation. To do so, a simulation platform has been developed and calibrated, then modified to host the 48V board net and all the components relative to 48V power: DC/DC converter, and battery. Simulation has been performed over WLTC driving cycle, to represent equivalent real driving conditions, at various temperatures. To evaluate the potential benefits of the 48V electrification in a larger way, an annual approach of the vehicle use has been performed with simulation, with comparison of several configurations. These results permit to show that 48V electrification for Premium vehicle has a clear potential of CO2 reduction. Two steps of 48V electrifications have been identified: the 48V electrification of specific components, such as the mechanical A/C compressor, blower, fan and PTC. It allows power on demand with higher energy efficiency, but also to consider turning electric other functions or components which couldn't be electrified without the power capacity given by 48V (Supercharger, water pump, electric suspension, power steering). Another step would see the use of specific 48V electrical machine, positioned at crankshaft, or linked to the gearbox to constitute a higher level of hybrid powertrain. Through this last level, the vehicle would see the cumulated benefits of: a) the 48V electrification of several components, b) the remove of the belt, c) the hybrid functions brought by a full hybrid architecture, with a 48V battery. The CO2 emissions of such a premium vehicle with these features could decrease by up to 15 to 20 % on WLTC. In the last part, a focus is done on the EDC, to underline the benefits of this component in terms of CO2 emissions and comfort. Some perspectives are given about the dimensioning of 48V electrical components, this activity is still ongoing.
