Safety during pipeline installation and operation must be considered anytime a pipeline crosses, parallels, or is otherwise near an overhead AC transmission line. Equipotential gradient mats must be installed at test stations or any aboveground pipeline appurtenances. Test station terminals must be of dead front construction. Pipe-to-ground AC potentials >15 V can be mitigated by installing sacrificial anodes or parallel grounding ribbon. Using appropriate software, the AC effects on a pipeline from an overhead AC transmission line during normal and fault operations can be estimated.
