The advent of the new family of aluminum rear axle differentials developed by Mercedes- Benz offers proof of the company's commitment to implementing lightweight design concepts that offer higher operative capacity while further minimizing power dissipation, or power loss. The design realized was able to effectively compensate for the new constraints that arose due to the change in materials, with the incorporation of a 4-pin compact differential accounting for most of the progress made in this area. Comprehensive computation and simulation analyses as well as a coordinated portfolio of trial testing exercises were also leveraged and accompanied the development process from beginning to end. Designing and integrating the powertrain with a view to achieving compliant NVH performance in and throughout the vehicle is a task that presents its own, special challenges.
