In this paper, a new modelling approach to predict the influence of road texture on the rolling resistance of car tyres has been presented. The total rolling resistance is approximated as the sum of the texture-independent rolling resistance and the texture-dependent rolling resistance. Although each part of the rolling resistance is analysed separately, both the analyses are based on the same FEM model. The texture-independent rolling resistance is the energy dissipation due to the large cyclic deformation of the cross-section of the tyre. This energy dissipation is analysed using a non-linear steady-state rolling analysis on the FEM model. The texture-dependent rolling resistance is the additional energy dissipation resulting from tyre vibrations due to the combined effect of tread profile and road texture. A tyre/road interaction model which directly solves for the contact forces and tyre vibrations expressed in the vehicle-fixed reference system is developed. Measured texture profiles are used as input for the tyre/road interaction model. The simulations show good convergence with an acceptable computational effort. The numerical results are compared to rolling resistance measurements on 30 test tracks on a test location at Kloosterzande, The Netherlands. A positive linear correlation is found between texture depth and rolling resistance in both simulations and experiments. Although absolute rolling resistance levels do not match, the agreement between model and experiments is good enough to conclude that the proposed modelling approach is a promising method to study the effect of road texture on rolling resistance.
