Within this investigation a five-piece wheel and tyre assembly of a heavy mining vehicle was experimentally tested. Additionally, the development of a numerical model to predict the deformation of the wheel and tyre assembly was also presented. Validation of the model to experimental findings was completed through examination of the displacement field of various regions on the tyre. Based upon the work completed with this study the following conclusions can be made: A linear relationship between experimentally observed maximum lateral and maximum vertical deflections was observed with a proportionality constant between the two deflection measurements equal to approximately 0.37 mm/mm. This relationship was consistent amongst the various tests considered in this study. A minor degree of hysteresis between the lateral and vertical deflections was observed in experimental trials. For the most aggressive loading condition considered within this study, maximum vertical deflection of the wheel and tyre assembly was observed to be approximately equal to 80 mm. A corresponding maximum lateral deflection of approximately 30 mm was noted. Good correlation between published engineering data and the experimental findings, with respect to force/vertical wheel displacement relationship, was found in this study. This finding is also consistent for the observed lateral deflections as well. Simulation predictions from the numerical model were rigorously compared to the displacement fields of various locations on the tyre. Maximum percentage error estimates were determined to be no greater than approximately 30%. For the majority of locations which were compared, the percentage error was found to be approximately 5% or less.
