Springback is one of the most serious concerns in press forming of high strength steel sheets. Springback is caused by stress in a formed part at the bottom dead point. The stress distribution is, however, so complicated that it is difficult to identify the particular stress which causes the springback. An analysis method using FEM simulation was developed in order to identify the areas which have major impacts on springback. In the developed method, a model of the formed part is automatically divided into analysis areas, and springback simulations are conducted repeatedly cancelling stress in one of the areas. The results of the springback analysis under the various stress conditions are compared, and the area with stress which has the most serious influence on springback is identified. This method enables quick and easy understanding of the springback mechanism without special knowledge or skills. And an example of its application is also shown as for an auto body model parts.
