The study indicates possible values of gauge enlargement, applicable in particular conditions, for a vehicle having bogies of 1,8 m wheelbase, wheels with UIC 510-2 profile, rail of 54 E1 type with slope 1/20. The study shows that gauge enlargement may modify the wheel-rail contact either positively or negatively so that the method should be adopted only if an exhaustive know-how is available. The results of this study are limited by the number of restrictive hypotheses used in the model; so the analyses are not exhaustive but provide an indication for more detailed studies, introducing new elements and increasing the number of variable parameters. A possible addition to the study may be to modify the friction coefficient, both in the longitudinal coordinate of the rail and in the lateral coordinate of the wheel, to simulate wheel flange lubrication devices and perform the gauge enlargement effects on the performances in those conditions. Another improvement may be to vary the curves speed, to verify in detail if its variation has an influence on the best gauge for a given curve radius or to simulate portions of railway.
