An analysis of the energy needs of large industrial enterprises shows that the production of commodities is the largest part of consumption. Especially in the European environment, energy prices have a non-negligible amount of steady factory costs. In a production company often exist longer periods of no manufacturing, which include the weekends and the holiday mode. Though the plants are usually switched to a lower energy level during this time, the energy saving potential often is undrawn. This produces base load, which can reach up to 50% of the energy performance required during production times. To save a significant proportion of non-value added energy costs by reducing base load, it is mandatory to obtain the production availability. Therefore different approaches have to be developed and verified to reduce the base load. A holistic view on the energy consumption of production facilities, the local conditions as well as the duration of the base load phases are necessary to be integrated in the developed methods. Since these factors usually not remain constant, a configurable approach is essential. Furthermore, continuous monitoring of the energy consumption is required to receive a power-optimized control. Possible errors have to be discerned easily to fix them and to ensure a frictionless restart of the production operation. To sustainably reduce energy consumption, individual approaches are presented in the paper. Besides the results, which would be reviewed in a highly automated automotive production are pointed out.
