A significant contribution to the aerodynamic drag of passenger cars is generated over the rear body surfaces as a result of the low pressure experienced under the separated base flow. Rear body tapering, or boat-tailing, can produce a recovery of the base pressure. In this study, the effects of tapering the upper rear body surfaces on the Windsor Body at model scale and the MIRA Reference Car at full scale are investigated. The influence of taper angle and taper length on the drag and lift characteristics are explored. It is shown that significant drag reduction can be obtained with moderate taper angles and, in general, increases with taper length. Modifications of the shoulder geometry to further reduce the drag are discussed. Unexpected features identified include very high drag for certain geometries and a local drag rise at a particular taper length.
