Travelling with higher speeds, modern ships have to face problems of rudder cavitation-erosion. Apart from that, the naval milieu leads to high corrosion rates and erosive wear by dispersed sediments. At present, these problems are countered by fluid dynamically optimized rudders, cavitation-resistant coatings on basis of synthetic materials and weld cladded coatings on steel basis. Expensive bulk Cu-Al-bronzes are in use at ships propellers and are established to withstand corrosion and cavitation. Deposited as coatings with bulk-like properties, such bronzes could also enhance rudder life times. In contrast to thermal spray methods, cold spraying can avoid undesired side reactions like oxide formation that restrict mechanical properties. Respective dense coatings could show bulk-like properties. The present study investigates the coating formation in cold spraying and attainable properties by using as atomized and by heat-treatment optimized CuAl10Fe5Ni5 powders. To improve bonding of the Cu-Al-Bronze on GL-A shipbuilding steel, also influences of different substrate temperatures were investigated. These first results demonstrate that cold sprayed bronze coatings have a high potential for ensuring a good performance in rudder protection. With further optimization, respective coatings could evolve towards a competitive alternative to existing anticavitation measures.
