In this paper we shall present the Active Gated Imaging System (AGIS) in relation to the automotive field. AGIS is based on a fast gated camera and Illuminator, synchronized in the time domain to record radar like images. The illuminator presented in this paper is based on Near Infra-Red (NIR) semiconductor laser technology. In recent years we have learned the system parameters which are most beneficial to night time driving in terms of; field of view, illumination profile, resolution and processing power. We shall present our laser safety approach of a Driver Assistance System (DAS) named BrightEye, which makes use of the AGIS technology in the automotive field.
