In this paper the basics for harvesting marine wave energy were explained especially focusing on the needs for transmissions connecting the WEC with the electric grid. The various requirements resulting from these basic aspects were used to define characteristics, displaying the behaviour and the quality of various solutions of transmissions. Possible components for a transmission were presented and combined resulting in four exemplary systems, while not claiming completeness of possible solutions. Afterwards, these solutions were evaluated with help of the characteristics leading to comparability of the transmissions. As only exemplary rather than real solutions were evaluated, not every characteristic could be specified. Additionally, the combination of WEC, transmission and grid requirement will influence some characteristics. With the presented approach of using the defined characteristics it is now possible to compare various combinations of WEC, transmission and grid connection as a complete system. Advantages and potentials of each system become apparent and may therefor also help in finding well-suited combinations.
