In this paper we presented a novel method for reducing the life cycle costs (running costs) of hybrid vehicles. To demonstrate our method we used a serial electric hybrid drivetrain bus. With the help of the dynamic programming algorithm, we calculated the optimal life cycle costs for each parameter set. The big benefit of this algorithm is the fact that it calculates the global optimal control strategy for the given optimization problem in an acceptable computational time. Especially for applications such as public transport the driving cycle patterns are well known and therefore the approach delivers an accurate estimation of the life cycle costs for the vehicle. The results illustrate the influences of the battery and the fuel costs under different conditions. We showed that the life cycle costs depend on the whole parameter set and can significantly differ from the fuel costs. We see the primary area of use of the proposed algorithm in the optimal dimensioning of drivetrain components.
