Market demands for increased load capacity along with high requests to performance, weight and safety especially in aviation drivelines requires high performance gears. Compared to helical gears in view of left and right flank bevel gear design in general might be considered as asymmetrical design although, a new approach has been undertaken to design bevel gears with asymmetrical teeth. Declared target was to increase flank load carrying capacity of an existing bevel gear set in a given transmission of a helicopter driveline. After the method how to carry out the design was defined, first problem was to establish design and calculation standards because no standards are available for asymmetrical design. Thereafter multiple designs were elaborated and compared among each other. Taken as a whole the asymmetrical bevel gear design shows increased performance. The decision was taken to go into hardware, to manufacture and test the design. Parts were manufactured, results from the tests are pending but will be available before the International Conference on Gears will take place. We apologize that the results are not available up to deadline for printing this manuscript. Application of the developed asymmetrical bevel gear design may not be restricted to helicopter transmissions or aviation in general, its potential might be of interest in all transmissions with low demands on coast side flank load carrying capacity and noise excitation.
