Every day more than 700 pedestrians die in traffic accidents with vehicles worldwide. To increase road safety the automotive industry makes an effort to improve and develop new Driver Assistance Systems (DAS) in order to decline accident severity or to prevent crashes. So called Pedestrian Protection Systems (PPS) identify the vehicle surrounding objects and classify them. If these systems detect pedestrians, they decide whether an autonomous action should be initiated because of an imminent accident. To test the functionality of the PPS humanoid dummies with natural motion sequences arc required. Nowadays available test systems do not fulfill the closeness to reality adequately. This paper presents the state of the art in the area of system testing PPS and the design requirements for a humanoid test dummy. For developing a novel pedestrian protection test system an overview on the musculoskeletal system of the human body with the range of motion (ROM) of the human joints is given. Designs of various humanoid robots are compared to each other to obtain the assets and drawbacks of the individual concepts. Thereby the main focus is on the shoulder joint, one of the most complex joints in the human body.
