The mass of information in a modern car is steadily increasing. Information for audio, navigation, telephone, contacts, the car surroundings, the car behaviour and status have to be displayed for the driver while he has to concentrate on the street. Thus the disturbance from the information have to be kept at a minimum. To be in control of these information, new display and interaction systems for the car have to be developed. One attempt of this topic is a free programmable instrument cluster, which allows to dynamically place graphical elements on a display depending on the traffic situation. The graphical elements show the car informations in place of the static and mechanical instruments and displays, which were state of the art. An operational concept is in control of the behaviour of these graphical elements and is filtering the informations, which are shown. In this article the needs and regulations of such an operational concept and free programmable instrument cluster will be analysed and a theoretical prototype of an operational concept will be presented.
