The requirements of ship design include minimizing emissions (greenhouse gases, smoke, NOx and fuel consumption. The drive system of a tugboat is designed to generate the rated power required for towing. However, harbor tugboats generally spend most of their time operating under low-load conditions, except when they are actually towing. Therefore, to reflect customer requirements, it is necessary to design a ship that can operate under optimum system performance conditions at any time. To meet this requirement, we have developed a hybrid system for a tugboat that uses a motor and a battery in a similar way to a hybrid vehicle. The source of propulsion power in this system consists of a diesel engine and an electric motor supplied by a high-density lithium ion battery. The use of a high-density battery instead of a lead-acid battery means that much less installation space is required, and this is an advantage for ships such as tugboats, in which space is relatively limited. The first hybrid tugboat in Japan to use the Niigata Hybridsystem has been in service in Tokyo Bay since March this year. As a result, this hybrid system has achieved a 20 % reduction in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions compared to the conventional system If this new type of hybrid ship can become established, it will be beneficial to the shipping industry and ship operators. This paper describes the introduction of the hybrid system and presents a development summary, showing the effect of the hybrid system. From the results obtained in this technical development, it is verified that the Niigata hybrid propulsion system is an effective way to reduce the environmental impact from the ship.
