The present study presents the application of the short galvanostatic pulse technique to characterise the corrosion rate and electrical double layer capacitance of the metal/soil interface; in the larger context of pipeline corrosion in soil environment. In view of the current difficulties and potential errors in using the potentiodynamic or linear polarisation resistance methods to grade potential soil corrosivity, it is demonstrated that the use of the short galvanostatic pulse method is apposite and provides a nondestructive analytical probe into the double layer characteristics. This technique was used to capture the effects of clay and chlorides on the corrosion of ferrous pipeline materials. An important outcome in the present work was the formulation of a practical framework for assessing aggressive soil samples. It was suggested that measurements be conducted twice; first under saturated conditions followed by measurements after a period of natural desaturation. In the absence of any available standards for verification of soil corrosion measurements, results for the synthetic samples utilised in this work serve as baseline reference values for any future work aiming to calibrate a given soil corrosion measurement system. Based on the present findings, investigations concerning the use of short galvanostatic pulse methods for accurate laboratory as well as possibly in situ corrosion studies in soil environment merit further pursuit.
