To get an efficient transmission of power, in some applications it's useful to modify the transmission ratio continuously. Providing different ratio between input and output speeds the infinitely and the continuously variable transmission have widely employed. A new kind of a variable transmission is the independently controllable transmission. It provides a continuous output speed which is independent of the input speed. The angular velocity of the output shaft is defined by a controller shaft. After an introduction in which the motivation and the initial situation is described, this paper deals with the conventional way of designing gearboxes and housings and a new process of designing these components. The conventional way of designing a gearbox is the initial situation for the design process of the ICT gearbox. In the beginning the requirements of a gearbox are mentioned. Another part of the conventional way are guidelines for designing gearboxes. Some of these guidelines will be applied on the gearbox of the ICT to model some rules which were needed for the design process. The process of the product design of the gearbox can be improved more efficiently by using the optimization with evolutionary algorithms, topology optimization and knowledge-based product development. The base for this design process is a process chain, which is created in this paper. This process chain is a guide for the next steps of creating the design process in detail. The first step is a parametric CAD model which is created in CATIA V5. Two models were made, one cast design and one welded design to develop a solution which is independent of the number of items and the manufacturing process. The CAD model consists of different parts, a model of the transmission layout, a model of the walls and a model of the design space of the outer and inner ribbing respectively. The model provides the complete design space of the gearbox. The optimal structure of the ribbing will be found by using Topology Optimization. Setting up the model of the Topology Optimization will be one of the next steps of this project.
