In this contribution we have summarized the requirements for gasoline particulate filters and discussed how they can be addressed by tailored product designs. The two main criteria when it comes to the technical assessment of gasoline particulate filters (GPFs) are low backpressure at appropriate filtration efficiency. Corning has developed two GPF technologies to address these two different approaches: Dev GC 200/8 with medium porosity for 'Add-On' solutions in 200 cells per square inch (CPSI) and 8 mil wall thickness design, optimised for high initial filtration efficiency at a low backpressure, bare or with a low washcoat loading. The high porosity Dev GC HP 300/8 technology for significant three way catalyst integration in the pressure drop and cold start (low PGM) optimized 300/8 design. The integration of three way catalyst is especially attractive where the GPF can replace one of the TWCs or shall be introduced as 'RDE' catalyst to enhance the conversion efficiency for the gaseous criteria pollutants, for example at high space velocities. Besides the cell configuration and material design another key parameter for optimised system performance is the installation space within the vehicle. Increasing the frontal area of the GPF (in reference to the three way catalyst, TWC) enables very low backpressure solutions. The implications from GPFs on required software (ECU) functionalities was discussed in the latter section of the paper. The experimental work with pre-loaded GPFs proofed the 'passive regeneration' concept even for drive cycles with temperatures below those known as regeneration temperatures for DPFs. These fundamentals will enable the development of map based regeneration determination that could be implemented as part of the engines after treatment control strategies.
