When IAV developed its electric drive unit 'DrivePacEV80', the focus was on high traction, high final speed, functional safety and a high level of integration and efficiency. These requirements resulted in a technical solution consisting in a drive unit with two speeds and an induction machine. The drive unit offers easy scalability; adaptation to diverse vehicles only requires minor modifications. All systems such as mechanics, traction motor, power electronics and transmission control were developed in-house. A first functional prototype was realized, its functionality validated and its performance ascertained. The first prototype already came very close to the development goals. The focus of the next development stage is on reducing the geometric dimensions and weight as well as on enhancing efficiency. In addition, the potential for further cost reductions will be analyzed. In order to broaden the possible scope of application of the electric drive unit, IAV is working on a concept with a direct combustion engine drive. The aim of this concept study is to define a powertrain that offers a high electric cruising range and low fuel consumption.
