Many tractor accidents happen during boarding. This problem is accelerated by the structural change, the use of larger tractors and the long physical life of used tractors on the farms. For the analysis of these accidents and the identification of prevention measures, database information and accident reports as well as surveys among victims and manufacturers were analyzed. In the period 2005 to 2008, 309 boarding accidents happened. This number corresponded to 48% (309/644) of all moderate, severe and fatal tractor accidents in Bavaria. The majority of the injured persons were men with an average age of 52 years, and most of the victims were managers or their parents. Three quarters of the accidents occurred in the area of the court and three-quarters of people were injured when exiting. Two-thirds of the injuries happened in the spring and summer, especially from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The direct costs of accidents were €11,310 on average. Descending accidents occurred in 47% of the cases during backward exit. The most frequently involved machine parts of these accidents were the treads (65%, 13/20). About 43% (6/14) of respondents stated smooth treads as disadvantageous during the accident and the incidental environmental factors (50%, 7/14), mentioned most frequently were the wet treads. In the evaluation of boarding means of 20 accident and 13 new tractors of different manufacturers, constructive ergonomic and safety deficiencies were determined according to existing guidelines and standards. The elimination of these deficiencies is only partially immediately possible; barriers arise from the different construction parts and crop-related differences in farming. Preventive measures to increase safety during boarding for tractors in use are the provision of information about adaptable improvements. For tractors in construction, these can be directly initiated by providing manufacturers with information about incidental machinery parts to promote a redesigning to achieve higher boarding safety.
