Vehicular safety is an important objective in several research activities for more than 40 years. Additionally, the protection of pedestrians becomes an increasing interest in the recent decades. Therefore, this paper deals with innovative driver assistance systems based on radar sensors for cars. Detection and classification of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, are the main topic of the EU funded ARTRAC project. In addition to this, precise road surface condition detection and surface friction estimation using radar sensors belong to further system objectives.
