Steel penstocks have been used as the main equipment of hydropower stations. Their materials have been improved to have higher strengths and thicker walls, resulting in the use of high tensile strength steels such as high tensile strength steels of 780MPa and 950MPa classes (hereinafter referred to as "HT780" and "HT950" classes). This paper introduces the welding consumables for such HT780 and HT950 classes steel. The welding consumables for HT950 steel have been put to practical use in the penstocks of hydropower stations. Also, the practical use of the FCW (flux-cored wire) for HT780 class steel has been started in the offshore structure industry, earning a high appraisal. The welding consumables for high-strength steels have been innovated in various properties and progressively applied in actual jobs. Although the toughness and crack resistance of the weld metal have been improved greatly, the following technical issues should be settled for the future.
