Detailed FEA is conducted to calculate the reference stress measured as the net section stress for a range of crack depth to wall thickness ratios of a 323.85 mm pipe with a wall thickness of 40 mm. Although simple expressions like Pi*a/t or Pi*a/(t-a) can be used to estimate the reference stress, as is seen from the comparison with results from FEA, they can be less conservative or overly conservative depending the crack depth to wall thickness ratio. The net section stress obtained using FEA can be very well approximated as a third order polynomial, in terms of (a/t), for both circumferential and axial flaws. This polynomial function can then be used to calculate the total reference stress leading to a better estimate of the failure point on the failure-assessment-diagram (FAD). While the results presented in this study are obtained assuming elastic behavior and are expected to be more conservative, a more complete analysis in the presence of global loads in the elastic-plastic region is expected to be conducted in a future study.
