The Automated Indoor Braking Analyzer (AIBA) of Continental is the first driverless indoor test facility for vehicle braking tests. The full controllability of the testing parameters and the resulting high test precision solves the challenge of the strong influence of these parameters on results in standard outdoor testing as explained this paper. Especially, in the case of the new EU tire label for wet braking the AIBA defines a next generation method for the determination of the label class. As another important aspect, the AIBA technology will be one input factor for Continental to make further advances in improving braking distances. More precisely, the increasing test precision will enable to distinguish wet braking performance of prototype tires on a high level. Due to the high precision braking procedure of AIBA also less braking tests are necessary in order to be statistically representative in the distinction of prototype tires which has a positive effect on the test capacity. Continental is the first tire manufacturer able to conduct braking testing during the whole year independent of the weather conditions. Because of the increasing demand in testing capacity this can be seen as big advantage. Note that the increasing demand is, on one hand, due to the significant diversification of products in the tire business and, on the other hand, due to the introduction of legal requirements like the EU label. Finally note that AIBA was honoured with the award as 'Development tool of the year 2013' by 29 international experts who voted as jury members of trade magazine Vehicle Dynamics International end of April 2013.
