In order to improve the safety and accuracy of vehicle dynamics and driver assistance systems, it is important to differentiate between normal curve driving and critical vehicle movements. Additionally it plays an important role for crash investigations to know how a normal driver handles a curve and what velocity ranges are passed in the various phases of a curve to accurately reconstruct accidents. At the moment such safety mechanisms and accident research are based on synthetic curves, e.g. curves with constant steering angle. A study of normal drivers has been performed at the Robert Bosch GmbH obtaining realistic data on the handling characteristics. The evaluation of normal driver probands shows that almost all drivers (95%) follow the same handling characteristics in driving through curves. The construction of the curves with clothoids at the beginning and end of the curves plays an important role, since it influences the braking and acceleration of normal drivers. The curve velocity in the middle of the curve depends mainly on the radius. Below 130 m the clothoid parameter A, which depends on the velocity of construction, and the curve angle have to be considered. In city curves the steering angle can be taken as depending variable to define the curve velocity. Apart from that the behaviour is the same as in county road curves. The steering angle is applied immediately with a constant gradient and the traces show an angled form. The slight jerk produced through the direct initiation of the steering (up to 30 °/s) most probably is damped by the steering elasticities and not noticed within the vehicle.
