Since FMVSS208 legislation, was introduced in 2004 airbag module developers have been faced a new challenge: so called Out-of-Position (OoP) requirements. A 3 year old child dummy, standing in front of a dashboard, will be hit by the deploying passenger airbag thus exposed to loads which must not exceed given limits. This test has also to be proven featuring a 6 year old child dummy standing there. And the deployment tests are repeated for both of the 3 and 6 year old child dummies this time seated in front of the dash board. More details can be found in the section "Dummy Positioning and Dummy Behavior". The FMVSS208 OoP requirements are completed with 2 testing conditions on the driver side featuring a 5% H3 female dummy positioned adjacent to the steering wheel. Relevant phenomena taking part in an Out of Position load case were identified. Existing physical models describing individual phenomena were scanned as for their capabilities. Dedicated test setups were designed and delivered in combination with advanced measurement systems the input for a fine tuning of these models. Validation was performed on sub-models rather than on a complex overall OoP simulation model. The assembled simulation model then described correctly experimentally observed trends. But one has to keep in mind that an increase in complexity of physical models does not guarantee for fewer discrepancies between measurement and simulation. Major attraction was on input parameter variations and its influence on the overall result. Thereby probabilities come into play generating a new view on the comparison of simulation and testing results.
