Multilayer composite engineered materials are made of layered sequences where the reinforcement is surrounded and supported generally by an organic matrix. These materials thanks to their mechanical proper ties found many structural applications in aerospace aeronautical transport civil engineering industries and in tanks storage and pipelines. To ensure their structural health in service condition it is necessary to proceed to a periodic inspection. The purpose is to reveal defects that may occur during the use of compo sites by the customer and affect their functionality. As a result developments are needed in the field of Non Destructive Testing (NDT) for these materials. Consequently the development of NDT methods to ensure their health safety is the essential key to guarantee their evolving Conventionally NDT methods used on metallic materials are often able to be applicable on the composite materials notably the Acoustic Emission technique (AE). This method standardized in Europe since more than twenty years for the monitoring of metallic structures has just been standardized since 2009 for the control of composite materials. However the evaluation criteria of composite structures in operating conditions by AE, remain generals. Indeed the sources of damage at the origin of emissions within are varied matrix cracking fibres pull out fibres ruptures delamination ..., contrary to metallic materials where often only one source control the damage mechanism crack for example. The Institut de Soudure considering its know how in the control of metallic pressure equipments by AE, extrapolates also its knowledge and feedback in this field on the control of Pressure Composite Vessels (COPVs) and capacities. Typical results of control and charactenzation by AE of mechanisms sources of damage within COPVs are presented.
