To make DC motors compact and lightweight, a slide type divided core with high winding density is proposed. With the subject slide type divided core employed on the DC motor of a fuel pump, the DC motor can be manufactured at a level of productivity equivalent to that for conventional armatures. This paper therefore concludes as follows. (1) After winding coils, the slide type divided core enables that simply press fitting the shaft secures the commutator and assembles the divided core. (2) Employing a coil winding method that enables continuous winding on the separated poles, the coils are produced without increasing the number of connections of the wire. (3) With the proposed slide type divided core employed on the armature of a fuel pump DC motor, the winding density increases by about two times that of an armature with the conventional distributed winding pattern structure while the fuel pump with the proposed armature is approximately 40% more compact and lightweight. Furthermore, for the purpose of mass production of stators with concentrated winding pattern structure to make middle to large size motors highly efficient, compact and lightweight, a divided core assembled by partial press fitting suitable for the production of high mix, low volume motors is proposed. With the proposed divided core used on a compressor motor, a production method has been established. This paper therefore concludes as follows. (4) The divided core assembled by partial press fitting has two types of layers stacked in an alternating fashion, each of which is made up of steel sheet pieces for the press fitting layers and steel sheet pieces for the inserting layer. This arrangement enables even large stators to be assembled with short stroke press fitting. (5) With the crossing points of the wire between the layers laid out outside the slot, the coil winding is perfectly neat and organized. Together with the reduction in coil peripheral lengths, this arrangement reduced the coil resistance to half the coil resistance of conventional motors with a distributed winding pattern structure. (6) By using on a compressor motor, the proposed divided core assembled by partial press fitting successfully makes the motor compact and lightweight with an approximately 30% reduction in the axial dimensions and an approximately 20% weight reduction compared to a conventional motor with a distributed winding pattern structure. The motor with the proposed divided core also improves the total efficiency by 1% to 3% in all the operating rotational speed ranges.
