As part of the design process of a small ducted fan aircraft, numerical simulation of the flow field and aerodynamic characteristics of the propellers slipstream and built-up rudders has been carried out. The MP method and the simplified EAD method that combines the vortex theory have been employed and compared. Although the EAD method can largely simplify the modeling and save the numerical simulation time, the result difference of the MP method indicates that EAD model and accuracy need to be improved. This study has shown that the EAD model can be significantly improved by correcting the momentum source function using experimental test data. The difference in the results produced by the MP method has been significantly reduced. The improved EAD method has high efficiency and adequate accuracy to simulate the flow field of propellers in the analysis and design of built-up rudders. The results obtained from the anti-torque rudders analysis show that the total aerodynamic forces can be obtained from the individual rudder. The aerodynamic results, such as the lift and drag coefficients and their variation with the rotation angle, can be used to determine the key design parameters of the anti-torque rudder system. The lift and drag of the attitude control rudder system cannot be obtained by summing the lift and drag of isolated individual vane. Analysis for the overall aerodynamic force with the flow interference effect has been carried out. The resulting aerodynamic lift and drag coefficients of the attitude control rudder and their variation with the rotation angle can be used to determine design parameters in the system. In summary, this research presents an efficient approach to analyze the aerodynamic characteristics of the propellers slipstream and built-up rudders for a small ducted fan aircraft. The approach and results would be useful for the study of flight stability and control of the aircraft.
