As a result of the large number of variants in the automotive industry, suppliers are forced to adapt their systems flexibly and economically to all the different vehicle variants. Moreover, the conditions of the different market segments require very different approaches to this flexibility. E.g., in segments with a small number of variant-specific production parts as it is in commercial vehicle projects, a standard system is often used, which must be adapted to a special vehicle, sometimes even by the customer him/herself. Since ZF Friedrichshafen AG is present in many market segments such as passenger cars, commercial vehicles, machinery, and agricultural vehicles, an optimized and flexible application solution is essential to fulfill the own requirements regarding quality and cost reduction and also meet the customers' requirements with regard to a great variety of functionalities. A system is adapted to a special variant within the application process. This includes the adaptation of the mechanical parts (wiring, attachments ...) and also the calibration of the electronic control unit (ECU). This report will give an overview of the solutions introduced by ZF Friedrichshafen AG in order to handle the challenges of a growing application process.
