Electrorheological fluids (ERF) make it possible to influence the natural frequencies and damping of a multi-degree-of-freedom tuned vibration absorber (TVA) immersed in ERF, so that this system can be used as an adaptively tunable vibration absorber or damper for various applications in structural dynamics. In this paper, an existing adaptive ERF absorber prototype which has proven that its natural frequencies and damping can be semi-actively influenced with high voltages up to 6000 V is applied to a real automobile substructure and measurements are made to validate its performance. A dashboard crossbeam, steering column and steering wheel are mounted on a massive foundation and excited via a shaker. The input force is measured with a piezoelectric force transducer and the vibration response at the steering wheel is measured triaxially with piezoelectric accelerometers. A real-time control system is used for data acquisition and the output of control signals for the high-voltage generators and the shaker. The structure is tested in three configurations: without absorber, with the standard TVA with fixed parameters and with the adaptive ERF absorber prototype. The ERF absorber prototype exhibits nonlinear behavior because of the BINGHAM-type behavior of the ERF. The standard TVA is also shown to exhibit nonlinear behavior, especially in the spring stiffness. Because both the automobile substructure and the absorbers exhibit strong nonlinearities, the input force is held constant with a feedback controller and the response curves are measured point-by-point for different excitation levels. The necessary steps to be taken during experimental setup as well as data acquisition and processing when dealing with nonlinear systems are described in detail. The obtained experimental results are compared for the three configurations and different excitation levels and the performance of the different setups is discussed.
