In this paper, a new test procedure to assess the state of the suspension system of a vehicle on a PMVI station has been presented. This procedure is based on the determination of the shock absorber damping ratio. Using the damping ratio as assessment criteria allows obviating the vehicle size or other vehicle parameters in the test results. To apply this procedure, a vibrating platform test bench has been developed. This test bench complies with the requirements to be used in a typical PMVI station. Using a mathematical model, the test parameters required to efficiently obtain the damping ratio have been established. From experimental trials, the test procedure has been validated and the feasibility of the test bench to determine the state of a vehicle suspension system has been confirmed. Experimental results obtained are independent of the vehicle mass and tyre pressure, indicating the robustness of the procedure. As the proposed test bench is based on the existing vibrating platform, the implementation of this new procedure in current PMVI stations is straightforward.
