This paper focuses on the Design Failure and Effect Analysis (DFMEA) for in-wheel motors designed for electric vehicles, with an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) hub bearing. There are some questions arising regarding the induced unsprung mass and its impact on enhanced dynamic loads, which can reduce the hub bearing's lifetime expectancy. Besides this, potential stator eccentricity or a variable air gap between permanent magnets on rotor and stator winding result in additional radial forces which also have an impact on reduced lifetime. The obtainable literature was studied regarding calculations of cumulative bearing damage and predicting credible load case sequences in order to evaluate the unit's lifetime expectancy. A comparison was made of a hub bearing implemented into a normal wheel with internal combustion engines (ICE) propulsion, with a hub bearing implemented into a direct driven in-wheel motor with induced radial force due to a higher amount of unsprung mass and potential eccentricity from 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm.
