The interaction between a loudspeaker and the enclosed space, into which it emits sound, is important for the resulting sound quality. The influence of a listening room on the low frequency behavior of a loudspeaker can be characterized by the ratio of the mean-square sound pressure and the sound power emitted. This ratio is referred to in the literature as room gain and investigations of listening rooms have been published. This paper presented an investigation of room gain based on measurements of a loudspeaker at three distinct positions in a car. The concept of room gain as well as the underlying theory was reviewed. Measurements were presented of the power averaged sound pressure and sound power emitted by the loudspeaker in each position. The sound power emitted by the loudspeaker was found to depend significantly on loudspeaker position. The mean-square sound pressure was estimated by a power average of the sound pressure measured at 16 randomly chosen positions distributed throughout the cabin. The normalization of the room gain curves above/around 500 Hz as suggested in literature did not make sense with the present measurements. When aligned below 200 Hz, the room gain measured in the car cabin did exhibit a similar rising tendency at low frequency that was independent of the loudspeakers position.
