Airframe icing is a topic of great interest to aerospace industry because it is mainly concerned with the safe and efficient operation of an aircraft under all weather conditions. Hence, understanding the freezing process of super-cooled water is a problem of fundamental importance and general utility. In the present work a numerical model is formulated for the freezing mechanism under the conditions of a metastable state of supercooling. The model is based on the physical and mathematical description of the classic Stefan-problem. Two different numerical approaches are used for tracking the interface between the liquid and solid phases. A dendritic growth can be observed being characteristic for the freezing process of supercooled water.
