Expectations and acceptability of environmental conditions inside aircraft cabins differ along passengers coming from various backgrounds. The cabin is separated into several temperature zones, a single zone typically hosts 10 to 100 passengers and thus all of them are exposed to about the same temperature. An individual cabin air temperature control for each single passenger has not been realised so far. Only a little control via the optional air outlets in the overhead personal service units may be provided. To investigate the personalization of the thermal environment in the passenger cabin the Ecfunded research project iSPACE (innovative Systems for Personalised Aircraft Cabin Environment) has been carried out. To perform an experimental validation of dedicated developed technologies for thermal comfort and humidification at seat level several first and business class seats were equipped with different personal ventilation systems. Different seat configurations with ventilation and temperature control, humidity control as well as full control of all of them, were tested in the Fraunhofer Flight Test Facility against traditional seats. In total eight set-ups were tested with 24 subjects at three different cabin temperature conditions (19.5, 23.5 and 27.5 °C). Physical and physiological measurements were recorded and subjects stated their sensations on questionnaires. Comfort aspects were analysed with respect to different personal ventilation systems. The analyses showed that individualized heating/cooling was perceived more comfortable compared to traditional seats, and comfort was rated highest for the individual control of all environmental conditions (i.e. temperature, humidity and ventilation).
