It is shown using the example of a V12/V16/V20 that the available tools provide new opportunities for the development of an engine family for heavy-duty applications, which would not have been imaginable with conventional engineering methods. Planning and investigating possible options for all conceivable application scenarios can be investigated in advance. Boundary conditions derived from customer load profiles can be directly used as variation limits in the optimization. As virtually any parameter can serve as a command variable, highly customized solutions are possible. Defining common parts and main dimensions form the solid foundation for a futureoriented, long-running kit concept which protects long-term investments in productionmachines and facilities. Standardization of parts and the use of design and material potentials in accordance with the application profiles of the different engine configurations make further cost savings possible. Finally, the computation results can help make the validation leaner by enforcing FEM simulation and testing of those variants which are most critical in terms of load and/or durability.
