Weight reduction is not just trendy but also very necessary for all areas of transportation, especially in view of the ever increasing costs of fossil fuels. Efforts to improve the "green footprint" increase the desire for stronger materials that will enable the downsizing of components. Multi-phase alloys are not new to the market but their limits are often below what is being required. Carpenter Technologies has developed alloys that are capable of taking weight reductions to the next level. PremoMet® (cobalt-free, high strength, high toughness quenched and tempered alloy) and Temper Tough™ alloys (ultra high-strength steel) were originally developed as high strength, high toughness alloys for the Aerospace industry but have also found their way into other areas where these highly desired properties are necessary.
