The purpose of this paper is to ensure the feasibility of the measurements of pressure waves inside of a model tunnel. Therefore several train speeds and configurations are tested, one of which is presented here. The changes in pressure, which are expected, can be measured with the experimental setup. The pressure changes can be clearly identified. So the investigation of pressure waves inside of a rail tunnel is possible with the new facility. Even the measurement of pressure on the surface of the moving train model is possible. Though the measured pressure rises do not fit exactly the theoretically predicted values, they are in the expected range and the discrepancy can be explained with the simplifications made for the derivation of the theoretical equations. Additional to the measurements with the clear tunnel configuration, first experiments with an extended tunnel portal were conducted, to study the influence on the first compression wave. The present tunnel hood works the way it is supposed to. The maximum pressure gradient can be decreased by about 45%. This is a very promising first result, because so far no optimisation of the hood was done. Most probably the hood can be improved, so that its efficiency increases. The presented measurements were performed just with one window configuration. So in future the challenge is to optimise the hood. Altogether it can be asserted that the new facility TSG (tunnel simulation facility) is qualified for the investigation of pressure waves and of the influence of of a hood on the first compression wave.
