In modern drive applications with field oriented current control strategies the position of the magnetic flux orientation is often measured with highly reliable and ruggedized sensors such as resolvers. The conversion of the position signal into digital information is usually accomplished by using a ready-made resolver-to-digital converter. In this paper a reliable, small sized and low cost alternative having higher dynamics is shown, and two different resolver excitation circuits are presented. The advantage of this kind of circuit is the established fact that most of today's electric machine inverters have already implemented AD converters and PLDs for current measurement conversion and PWM generation. With these elements it is easy to get the digital form of the angle's sine and cosine. Thus the position signal can be calculated evaluating the four quadrant arc tangent function.
