The early detection of failures in electrical vehicle drives is essential for functional safety, for the avoidance of further deterioration, and in order to maintain high energy efficiency. The approach presented in this paper describes a new measurement and evaluation method that allows the precise on-bord diagnosis of changes in the electrical resistance, e.g. due to the derating of connection systems or the interruption of even a single strand of the coil. As the method is based on the analysis of asymmetries, it is robust and independent of temperature or initial resistance values.
