Future propulsion systems need to be much more efficient than those today in order to cope with the increasingly more stringent global CO2 emission legislation. Powertrain hybridization enables significant fuel efficiency benefits, for which there are a variety of competing concepts currently under development. Some are based on existing architectures and others require a complete new powertrain design. On a component level the diversity ranges from more or less existing right through to completely new technology. However, the degree of electrification and its dedicated advantages needs to be well balanced with the significant on-cost. This paper illustrates the evolution of existing powertrains towards mild hybridization with a focus on optimized cost in relation to benefit ratios. Both gasoline and diesel engines will be covered as the primary power sources.
